Non-linear seismic deformation analysis on complex or critical structures on potentially liquefiable soils are often performed using numerical methods using comprehensive soil constitutive models like PM4Sand. Information that can be obtained from such models include: estimates of cyclic shear stress ratios from seismic loading, estimates of deformation and estimates of excess pore pressures.
The PM4Sand model is a stress-ratio controlled, critical-state compatible, bounding surface plasticity constitutive model developed by Boulanger and Ziotopoulou. The model was developed and implemented to approximate stress-strain responses of specific importance to geotechnical earthquake engineering and liquefaction problems. This online training introduces the PM4Sand constitutive model and its use in nonlinear dynamic analyses of liquefaction during earthquakes using PLAXIS.
This online training will focus on the details and procedures important to using the PM4Sand constitutive model in practice as well as demonstrating its for the analysis of quay wall.
The attention will be given to:
- Formulation of the PM4SAND constitutive model
- Evaluation of the model parameters
- Practical set-up of a 2D model for site response analysis on a quay wall involving sand liquefaction
- Main output functionalities related to liquefaction assessment
This online training will first consist of a 45 minute presentation introducing the PM4Sand constitutive model. The presentation will then be followed by a 1h00 in-depth live demonstration highlighting the modelling workflow on a 2D quay wall analysis. Finally, a 15 minute question-answer session will be held.
The online training will benefit participants already having some level of familiarity with nonlinear dynamic analyses, nonlinear constitutive models, soil liquefaction during earthquakes, and the computer program PLAXIS. Coverage of each topic will include a review of background information and underlying fundamentals.
After the training participants receive the training materials:
- presentation slides (in pdf)
- PLAXIS model file(s)s (latest PLAXIS version only)
- link to the recorded video (available 3 months)
- summary of the Questions & Answers
